Skincare IQ: A Delicate Balance of Our Skin's pH

This is the first of a series of blogs in understanding our skin and the correct at home skincare Rx for healthy and radiant skin at any age!

Our skin is the largest organ, and yet most of us don’t treat it with the care and respect it deserves. So, let’s start to understand our largest organ.

The skin has a slightly more acidic pH of 5.5 to protect itself since acidity kills bacteria. As we age, the skin becomes more and more neutral (pH 7.0), and therefore weaker and prone to problems.

The skin’s pH is one of the major contributors to various skin problems. For example, studies have shown that the P. acnes bacteria is very much dependent on the pH value of the skin. The P. acnes growth is minimum at the normal skin pH of 5.5, but a slight shift towards the alkaline pH would provide a better environment for the P. acnes to thrive. People prone to skin conditions such as acne or eczema tend to have a higher than normal skin pH.

Aging skin concerns such as adult acne, uneven pigmentation, enlarged pores, dryness, redness, sensitive and/or Rosacea prone skin need skincare products that have a pH value close to our own skin. However, most skin soaps are very alkaline (pH 9-11) and can create havoc to our skin.

Our goal at FaceBody Essentials Skin Spa is for everyone to achieve healthy, radiant skin at any age. Let us guide you in transforming your skin (and balancing its pH).

Beautiful skin is a measure of its care. Love your skin!TM
